DON’T LET AIRPORT OFFICIALS BANISH PETS FROM THE AIRFIELD

Some of the best general aviation airports in the world have airport pets, the most popular being the “airport dog.” Sadly, it was rumored that some airport officials in my area want to do away with airport pets, citing them as an “unprofessional image.”
When I was growing up around the Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO) in Greensboro, North Carolina, the airport dog was a wonderful mixed breed named “Radar.” There wasn’t a chance that he was going without food and care because several folks adopted him and regularly“spoiled him rotten,” as the expression goes. Radar caught on to this attention and would make his rounds at the airport for food, liberal petting and even a little bit of catch with an old slobbery tennis ball. Heck, Radar even afforded trips outside of airport property for regular vet appointments.
Sadly, there is a rumor going on out there that some airport officials want to banish full-time pets from the airport because they feel they don’t represent a“professional image” for corporate aviation. Others say that pets are a danger to aircraft, which seems like a convenient excuse to get rid of “the problem.” The only danger I know of is to the pet, because when one comes up against a propeller (humans included) the prop wins every time. Airport pets I have known possess significant “street smarts” with respect to moving aircraft and have survived the airport environment for many years.
There are some airport managers that have capitalized on making the airport pet a part of their distinct personality, such as Howie Franklin’s close companion Daphne. She is rarely far from the side of Howie at the Cape Fear Regional Jetport (SUT) in Oak Island, North Carolina in her duties as mascot and designated bird chaser.
While the “cookie-cutter” approach might work for fast food restaurant chain it’s the personality of an airport that promotes repeat business. Airport leaders, remember not to bite the hand that feeds you!
