WELCOME PILOTS

I totally forgot to send over the complete newsletter to my editor. Therefore, like a TV reporter without a teleprompter, I will keep it short and sweet, less I get smacked on the hand for sending out unedited material.

This week we are talking about National Take Flight Day and Automated Weather Observation Station (AWOS). Enjoy!

PILOT SAFETY MINUTE VIDEO #32 ~ WEATHER REPORTING TECHNOLOGY (AWOS/ASOS)

IMPORTANT AUDIO PRESENTATION AVAILABLE:
“OPERATIONS AT NON-TOWERED AIRPORTS”… for pilots flying just for the fun of it.

With the issue of sequestration, the shut-down of many Air Traffic Control Towers is a possibility. Regardless, it is important to know how to safely and efficiently operate at Non-Towered Airports. In this audio book TC Freeman discusses; straight in approaches, dealing with aircraft on extended downwind and traffic pattern entries.

HELP US SPREAD THE WORD: NATIONAL TAKE FLIGHT DAY, SATURDAY, APRIL 12, 2014

By TC FREEMAN

I was recently asked by a subscriber, “What are you going to do for National Take Flight Day (NTFD)?” Before we get too far ahead of ourselves perhaps a review of the mission of this grassroots effort is appropriate.
NTFD began as an idea sparked by the ten million less flight hours flown by general aviation pilots over the past ten years (FAA). I have personally noticed that when I look up to the sky on a beautiful weekend that small aircraft traffic is sadly absent. In the purest sense NTFD answers the question, “Wouldn’t it be cool to see a lot of aircraft flying on Saturday, April 12, 2014? Imagine pulling up one of the popular flight tracker programs and seeing a screen full of sport aviation aircraft!
Why April? The significance of this month is two-fold. One, the first pilot’s license was issued to William P. MacCracken, Jr. in April, 1927. What about Orville Wright? The story was that Orville had quit flying by then and deferred the honor to Mr. MacCraken. I suppose you can say he might have felt that he had, “been there, done that, and got the t-shirt,” so to speak. Second, the weather is typically good in April, which means more pilots can participate.
One of the goals of the program is to let the pilots decide what type flying they will do on NTFD. However, it’s important to address what this program isn’t. It’s NOT a political statement in which pilots fly to an airport close to their respective state capital, jamming up airspace and creating havoc. The mission is to humbly fly, be it from a large metropolitan airport or from a small grass strip. Flying can be as simple as doing a couple of touch and go’s, flying Young Eagles or taking a vacation trip to the beach.
In addition to flying, how can you help? Being a “grassroots effort,” that’s code for not having a marketing budget. It’s up to you, dear reader, to get the word out. Here are some ideas:
·         Print and post the flyer at your airport (get the flyer here).
·         Email fellow pilots (clubs, flying schools, etc.) the website link:www.NationalTakeFlightDay.com.
·         Contact the local media and share the event with them, making sure you tell them about your love of sport flying.
After the event be sure to go to the www.NationalTakeFlightDay.com website and sign the logbook. You can also consider writing a short paragraph or share a video that we can link to from our website.
Be a part of history on the first NTFD, Saturday, April 12, 2014. Be sure to get out and fly to show your community the importance of aviation.
