FURTHER DOWN THE ROAD FOR AVIATION YOUTH PROGRAMS

I just spent the day going to an aviation summer camp kick-off ceremony and talking to high school students working at the airport as interns. The first thing that struck me was all of the great folks who put an amazing amount of time, energy and resources to create an avenue for youth to see the opportunities in aviation. A big salute goes out to the all those involved; from organizations, colleges, businesses and volunteers. I promise not to forget pro-active family members for supporting interested youth. The question we have to continually ask is, how to we attract more youth to these programs and, more importantly, give them tools to take the next step?
As a usual participant at youth aviation events there is inevitably an adult who engages the audience by asking, “Who wants to be a pilot, engineer or aircraft mechanic?” (Quick sidebar: It's interesting to note that the majority of today's youth indicate they want to be an aeronautical engineer verses a pilot. I'm not 100% certain of this change but my theory is the focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (S.T.E.M.) curriculums.) Back to the story, after the youth answer the question regarding their interest in aviation, the subject tends to be glossed over or a review of the speaker’s area of expertise. While there is nothing wrong with a personal perspective from a knowledgeable adult in the aviation industry, what is missing is the big picture.
No matter the career field of interest, it is imperative that adults give youth a “roadmap” (or “airway map”) to success. For instance, we have several groups of high school students that attend an aeronautical engineering camp hosted by a local major university. I commend the students on getting involved with the camp and encourage them to keep searching out aviation activities in their respective hometowns. Typically, my suggestion is to join an Experimental Aircraft Association chapter. These chapters have members that build homebuilt aircraft which is great way to get involved with aviation. Other recommendations include Aviation Explorer Posts, flying clubs, community college maintenance and pilot ground schools, the Civil Air Patrol, Fixed Based Operators (FBOs) and quality internships.
One thing that really chaps my hide is how companies and organizations handle aviation internships. After being responsible for several interns, it is interesting how some people view the function of this job position. While I'm all for the usual “grunt jobs” that come with internships, the job should have a real component of learning and appreciation. Copying papers, emptying trash and sitting in on a meeting as the bosses ego-stroke is hardly making good use of a young person’s time.
Personally, I probably deal with interns in a philosophically different way than most people. I take time to learn what the person’s career track, skills and abilities and interest (aviation and otherwise) are. Asking the question, “What would you like to change about aviation?” sparks a multitude of answers. One intern said he was disappointed that there were not enough internships available in aviation. My answer, “Come up with a plan to change it and we will implement it.” Another intern said that he really enjoyed working with kids and wanted to develop more youth aviation activities for our website (another skill-set).
While covering our departments existing goals and plans, I do level with them by acknowledging that they will indeed do the boring stuff that I have to do, but they will also have the opportunity to do some of the fun stuff. How's that for a welcome to the real world? While the majority of internships have a certain amount of boring activities it's important to inspire formative interns to do good things.
